Social Studies, is a new subject for us TESL students. The subject is about learning the culture and society around us and throughout the world. Our lecturer, sir Dzaki bin Suda, is teaching this subject for our class. He is one of the most respectful lecturers to us. Like every subject, it has its own assignment. For Social Studies, the assignment was making an exhibition about topics given basely about Communication and also Culture and Society. There were eight topics have been given for us to choose. For example, there were Technology and Communication, Early and Modern Communication, Counter Culture and Subculture. Each TESL classes were divided into eight small groups of five. My groups consist of Ahmad Muzakkir, Wan Muhammad Nasir, Wan Muhammad Akmal, Muhammad Faez and me. So, there will be thirty-two groups for the exhibition because this year, TESL has four classes. This exhibition is 30% of 100% marks for this semester Social Studies. We also been given a period of time for finishing this assignment. The exhibition was held on 30th September 2010 between Ungku Omar Hall and Ibnu Sina Library. The exhibition started at 8.30 in the morning until 1.00 in the afternoon. We need to bring our advertisement board, carrying all of our exhibition things and got to find a place to set up our exhibition according to our TESL group member. Then, the lecturers from English Department start judging our exhibition. One of the judges is mr. Dzaki himself. We were judged from our creativity on setting up the exhibition by using multimedia software, displaying all printed exhibits, realias, and a clear citation of sources and references used. Moreover, we also were judged in the aspect of clear and concise information presented, the content about the topic related to our theme, the message and information intended to deliver and also the fluency and accuracy of language use when presenting or explaining the information to the audience. The audience including the other lecturer and all student of Institut Pendidikan Guru Malaysia Kampus Dato Razali Ismail.

As for our group, we decided to choose the theme of Communication. According to our theme, there were four topics related to communication. The first topic is about the early and modern communication. In this topic, I can see the difference in mode of communication during the early ages and nowadays. For example, in early ages, people trying to pass information by drawing it on the caves, sending a letter by using a pigeons, the story telling and trying to communicate by using a drums and smoke signal. But nowadays, we use the internet to send emails, instant messaging with friends and even video conferencing to share information. The next topic is about technology and communication. Technology is very useful in improving our communication. From hand-held computer to touch phone, technology advancement in communication are endless and it mode of communication are unlimited. Next is persuasive propaganda. Persuasive propaganda is also an important part of communication. For example, When the government uses the media in an organized and deliberate way to get people to believe about something, when a corporation uses the media in an organized and deliberate way to get people to think that a new type of thing is better than the old, a private group uses the media in an organized and deliberate way to get people to adopt a negative attitude towards immigrants, that is propaganda. The last topic is about leadership and communication. A lot of problems that occur in an organization are the direct result of people fails to communicate. The major problem is fault in communication. This is because it leads to confusion that can cause a good plan to fail. In addition, communication is the exchange of information and ideas from one person to another. It involves a sender transmitting an idea to a receiver. Furthermore, effective communication occurs only if the receiver understands the exact information or idea that the sender transmitted. Moreover, studying the communication process is crucial because it involves coach, coordinate, counsel, evaluate, and supervise throughout the process. It is the chain of understanding that integrates the members of an organization from top to bottom, bottom to top, and side to side.

Based on the theme chosen, communication that is, our group decided to choose the topic technology and communication. We focused more on the definition of technology and communication, the history of technology, advantages and disadvantages of technology in communication. As a learner and based on our topic about technology and communication, we learn that communication plays a very important role in our life. Furthermore, we need to communicate to each other so that we can share all the knowledge with others. Communication consists of two types, which are a verbal and non-verbal. These two types of communication are very essential in our lesson. Technology can help us in our lesson as a learner. For example, by using computer devices, we can learn best by using the Microsoft office presentation. And also by displaying the diagram, it will give us a much clearer view about some topics in our lessons. Television can give benefits to us as it contain an educational program and channel to be watch. These kinds of educational programs can give very detailed information and a variety of knowledge to be explored to the learner in our lesson and thus, can enhance our thinking skills. In addition, a good communication can ensure the lessons to be done successfully and can fulfil the objectives and the learning outcomes.

It took about two weeks for us to do the preparation for the task. After finishing this task, we learn very details about the relation between technology and communication in our daily life. The invention of technology helps us a lot in our communication. For example, the invention of phones enables us to talk to other people easily as we can use it anytime and anywhere. Cell phones have become a necessity for many people from all walks of life. The ability to keep in touch with family, friends and business associates, and access to email are only a few of the reasons for the increasing importance of cell phones. Today's technically advanced cell phones are capable of not only receiving and placing phone calls, but storing data, taking pictures, and can even be used as GPS. The computer is also is a vital device for us to communicate with others. With the help of the internet, people can chat, email, making a blog for information and can communicate directly with each other. Besides telephone and computer, television is also an important mass media in communication. People can gain information and knowledge by watching the television. Satellite is also plays an important role in communication as it help to send a signal from one device to the other. This clearly indicates that technology is very important to help us in our communication.

After finishing doing this exhibition, I learn a new and a very valuable experience. During the exhibition, all groups were doing a very good job in setting up the exhibition. As I can see, the information and knowledge presented is very clear and detail. So this will make the audience easy to understand what we are trying to explain to them. This exhibition obviously giving me lots of new information and knowledge. The other groups are doing an exhibition about the culture and society. I walk around and try to see what they are trying to present. From their exhibition I know very details about culture with the aid of things related to culture showed. Furthermore, I am able to understand all about the components of culture, cultural change, cultural diversity, about technology and culture, multiculturalism and also four main agents of socialization.

In conclusion, this exhibition gave me a new experience in conducting such big program. It also gives me a very detailed information and knowledge based on the theme that is on communication and also about the culture and society related to our life. Obviously all groups are doing a very good works and hopefully we as a TESL student can always maintain our good works in the future. Well done.
